So, a lot of clients ask me why I bother to sell prints, albums, and other tangible products when most photographers just sell digital files. I mean, we’re living in the digital age, right? Why is it SO important to “display” photos?
Well, for years now, psychologists have been studying the impact of printed photographs on children’s development. As both a mom and a photographer, this topic really hit home for me, and it turns out, family photos are way more impactful than anyone realized.
Printed photographs have actually been shown to raise a child's self-esteem and help build a stronger sense of self-worth.
Experts have found that displaying family photos allows children to see and understand where they fit into the family and how important they are to that family unit. Seeing these photos creates a sense of safety and security, which can help children grow up with less stress, anxiety, and insecurity.
So, you may be wondering… why not just look at family photos on our phones?
Well, these studies show that viewing photos on a screen has much less impact on a child’s psyche than a tangible photograph. Experts say that displaying family photos in the home, where a child can see them every day, creates a sense of reassurance and comfort that just can’t be achieved through a screen.
Amazing, right?!
Scientists also say that prominently displaying your photos in the home sends a message to your children that family members are important, and that we honor the memories we’ve shared together.
Some experts even recommend placing photographs of the child with their family in the child’s bedroom, so they can see them before going to sleep and as one of the first things they see when they wake up.
This reinforces the message: “We love you, we care about you, and you are important.” Awwww!
So, what’s the best way to display photos at home?
That’s completely up to you. Everyone’s home decor choices are different. Some people display family photos in high-traffic areas like an entryway or main living space, while others prefer to keep them a bit more private in upstairs hallways or bedrooms. Some even line their staircase with years' worth of memories.
But no matter how you choose to display your images, the important thing is to print them and showcase them proudly in your home. Who knows... displaying your photos may help you, too!
